Reptiles
Bluebell Ecology can assist with reptile surveys, mitigation, licensing and translocation.
How we can help you
If it is required our experienced ecologists will survey the given site for reptiles by assessing the potential for such species with a thorough preliminary visual survey. If this initial survey indicates a potential for reptiles, further surveys will be arranged by installing and inspecting artificial refugia over a defined period.
Reptile Licenses and Mitigation
If the survey findings indicate the presence of reptiles and the development proposal is deemed to potentially affect the species present, a mitigation strategy will be necessary. Due to the limited distribution of smooth snake and sand lizards their presence will result in a license application to the relevant Statutory Nature Conservation Organisation (SNCO), which in England is Natural England.

UK Reptile Distribution:
The adder, common lizard, grass snake and slow worm are relatively widespread throughout England although distribution can be relatively isolated, particularly this is the case of the adder. The smooth snake and the sand lizard have a restricted distribution. Due to habitat loss reptiles in the United Kingdom are listed as a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), that will now be replaced by the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework. UK Reptile Habitat: Typical reptile habitats include:
Whereas sand lizards and smooth snakes are associated with dry heathland. Woodland is also an important hibernation area for reptiles. |
UK Reptile Legislation:
The adder, common lizard, grass snake and slow worm are fully protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). The sand lizard and smooth snake are fully protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) and Schedule 2 of The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (as amended) making it a European Protected Species.
